Real Tenants, Real Results: ECO4 Success Stories from Across the UK
In the North West of England, households have to deal with colder, wetter winter periods. A cosy, well-insulated home is a much-needed solution to these cooler, darker months.
Not only can this improve living quality, it can ease the daily lives of those struggling with cold-exacerbated medical conditions, and reduce monthly costs.
In this article, we’ll be demonstrating real-life ECO4 success stories that we’ve been able to bring to life. All of these projects have offered significant improvements to the living standards of the recipients, capturing not only much improved energy performance certificates (EPCs), but also great savings on energy bills.
Read on to see what ECO4 success stories the team at Castle Eco Solutions have helped achieve, or explore our recent projects here.
£25,000 FREE Eco4 Grant Installation in Bolton
Period properties, due to their age, can often suffer from poor insulation or a lack of up-to-date heating systems. Such was the case with a lovely property in Longworth Bank, Bolton, our first ECO4 success story in this article. The tenant, Alison, had to deal with significant discomfort when it was cold due to poor insulation and outdated storage heaters.
In early 2025, we helped Alison feel more at home by solving these two issues, allowing her to better maintain a comfortable temperature, especially when it most mattered - the harsh winter months.
- Date of Installation: February 2025
- Location: Bolton
- Type of Eco Grant: ECO4 Grant
- Grant Approved: £25,000
- Cost to Homeowner: £0
- EPC before: F ⛔️
- New EPC: B ✅
The Castle Eco Solution: We first insulated the external walls of Alison’s cottage with internal wall insulation, which is a fantastic way of immediately enhancing thermal performance. On top of this, we also insulated the loft - a very common area to lose heat through, as hot air rises due to being less dense than cooler air.
Additionally, there was the issue of the home’s outdated storage heaters. Storage heaters are self explanatory - they store heat generated during off-peak hours (such as overnight), and then release that heat when it is needed the most. This is an incredibly effective way of reducing energy costs, as you’re sourcing heat from the least expensive part of the day.
Finally, to truly bring this household up to real energy-efficiency, we installed solar panels on the roof to make the most of renewable energy, creating free, renewable energy even on cloudy days.
£20,000 of FREE Eco Solutions Installation in Barnoldswick
Before we were helping Alison with her cottage, our team were in Barnoldswick for an eco-friendly renovation project.
Prior to our assessment and installation, the property was facing great difficulty in being thoroughly heated. The household had not been updated in a long time, utilising a gas fire in the living room and oil heaters in the bedrooms. We decided these need to be changed, and so we set a goal of enhancing the comfort of the property.
- Date of Installation: January 2025
- Location: Barnoldswick
- Type of Eco Grant: ECO4 Grant (qualified for three mean-tested benefits)
- Grant Approved: Over £20,000
- Cost to Homeowner: £0
- EPC before: G ⛔️
- New EPC: C ✅
The Castle Eco Solution: The final decision involved full room and roof insulation on the first floor, alongside internal wall insulation on the ground floor. At the same time, we installed a central heating system - the first one the property had ever had. This included a modern boiler, radiators, and heating controls, leading to an efficient and effective heating solution.
It took three weeks for the grant to be approved, and one week for the installation to be completed, meaning it only took four weeks to see remarkable improvement in insulation and heating, resulting in a huge jump in EPC rating - from a G to a C.
£12,000 of FREE Eco Solutions Installation in Clitheroe
In Clitheroe, it can get windy and cold, meaning comprehensive energy efficiency solutions are a must-have.
In this project, these solutions were especially important. Initially initiated due to health conditions in the recipient family, this project shows that homeowners and tenants can qualify for funding through flexible eligibility. If you’re curious about what health conditions could lead to grant approval, read our in-depth article on the subject.
The grant was secured after sourcing a doctor’s referral which confirmed the health condition. This was then submitted to the local council for approval, which took two weeks. After this, the installation was scheduled within the next two weeks.
- Date of Installation: February 2025
- Location: Clitheroe
- Type of Eco Grant: ECO4 Grant (Flexible Eligibility)
- Grant Approved: Approximately £12,000
- Cost to Homeowner: £0
- EPC before: F ⛔️
- New EPC: C ✅

The Castle Eco Solution: This was another ECO4 success story. We helped install comprehensive improvements for this home in Clitheroe, which involved high quality wall insulation, resulting in an energy performance rating improvement of F to C. For the client, this was a huge win, and they were happy to state “I have seen a massive reduction in my heating bills.”
